Sarkandaugava is located north of the center of Riga, which was included in the city limits in 1828. Initially, this part of the city was inhabited by representatives of professions, who were supported by the Daugava - movers and fishermen. 16th century Sarkandaugavas tributaries began to also be called Punishment ditch, because there happened convicted witch floating, assuming that the water sink wizards and witches that are lighter than others.
The location of Sarkandaugava is special. So peculiar that Tsar Peter I decided to move the city of Riga here and build the Second Imperial Garden, which was located near Sarkandaugava. It should be mentioned that it was also planned to build a stone castle here, but there is no information about the implementation of this intention.
